song + dance

there are always a few events in february to remind us that new england is still somewhat alive. starting to be lots more music that i want to go out to now that "hard winter" is over.

on friday, there was the sex workers art show. as usual, very funny and poignant. there's still a little bit left of their tour in case you're interested...
also saw bill t. jones on saturday; chapel/chapter. i never watch news (or tv) because i don't want the violence burned into my brain. in these dances, he included lots of repetitive readings of violent events and i found myself focusing on the cellist's hair so i wouldn't have to envision the events. the dancing was good but the overall evening reminded me that i like it less when artists just present. i like to see the events worked through. i think he considers it an ongoing conversation, tho.
(here's a short clip of the dance if you want to see/includes sound)

and i've made yarn, too. i am just making stuff for me, more and more.  i like just satisfying myself.

evidence

i notice that i often spin in extremes: if i do a bunch of fat yarns, then i want to go thin. very bright + colorful to dark + moody. evidence:

this yarn looks like an animal to me

some yarn for your ghoulfriend...perhaps enough for a scarrrrrrdf for neck wounds de nehhhk ;)

linda scharf handspun yarn/stoneleafmoon.com

one of the cats has been bringing in all sorts of little animals, mostly alive, since we moved here. she clearly just wants to play with them. so i have been able to hold lots of creatures that i don't normally get to...yesterday was a chipmunk, and recently, a bird and a little bunny. i was able to set them all free.

nervous fiber

i'm pretty calm, but am making fuzzy offerings to the computer goddess:

linda scharf/stoneleafmoon.com

the pc is having some problems. and not everything is backed up :(
i'll live, but :(

the good news, tho, is that i (was forced) to try some new things. i uploaded photos to the mac + resized there, then uploaded to flikr, so that's how you're seeing above photo. :) for some reason, i just wanted to stick with loading photos onto the pc + resizing with photoshop, blablahblah. ANYWAY, if they can just save all the photos from the pc, it'll be better.

good *save the pc vibes* sent my way appreciated :)

snakes revealed

so you probably couldn't tell what the snakes on a  plane yarn looked like when it was on the bobbin, so here it is:

linda scharf handspun yarn/stoneleafmoon.com

showed yarn~y stuff this weekend at the somerville farmer's market/art market. that's so much fun! everybody's just out running into friends and picking out the good corn :) people in somerville seem to carry around their own bags for purchases more than anywhere else i've seen (at least around boston).
and there was good music by shiner jones~i liked this a lot. they were really lively and lent a good atmosphere...

attending an event today on citizen journalism (sort of connected to wikimania, which was held in boston this year). will report back. hope your days are fun :)

ok, two things...

first, i hope all my spinning friends are working on a yarn version of "snakes on a plane" because, um, samuel jackson needs our help!!!

linda scharf handspun yarn/stoneleafmoon.com

and #2: do you see this? what it means is that i'm going to be in BIG trouble when i try to comb it out. usually before the heat strikes, i braid it and it doesn't get tangled. but i haven't had time to comb it for about a month (!!) so i just threw it up there and now it is dread city/snakehead. but at least my neck is cool :)

fresh almonds + charkha

before this wknd, i never saw either of these two items: fresh fuzzy almonds! when you either burst or cut them open, there's a very tasty little almond inside that does taste different than when they are older and more dried, as i usually eat them. they were a nice surprise to come upon.
and here's a spinning wheel from india. don't know exactly how to work it and/or if it is operable in it's current state, but i am on the road to find out. if anyone has seen a diagram of this type of wheel functioning,, please let me know. i'll also ask around in the spinning commmunities, and have joined a charkha yahoo group. it is a really beautiful item :) i wouldn't mind if it turns out to be purely decorative, but i would also like to be able to spin cotton with it, if i can...

"useless"

inspired by a discussion read earlier this a.m. that included (yarn) nazi-like statements which led me to the thought of a "yarn useablity act/proclamation", i spun this "useless" yarn. no one will take away my freedom/s.

more on the nipple...

this yarn is destined to be crocheted up into a nipple, i think...it's lumpy, but i kind of like the metaphor of including it in a project (http://www.thenippleproject.com) that's about breast cancer awareness, because if we feel our breasts, they ARE lumpy sometimes. so getting to know our own breasts and which bumps and lumps are always there, versus the ones that are new and, perhaps, need attention...
